The South African Clemitsons are all from "branch 1" of the family.

They are descendants of John William Clemitson, who was born 1847, in Newcastle-on-Tyne.

John was a Fitter and Turner, and married Hannah Fawcitt at Auckland in 1869. They had four children - Annie, Richard Lough, Joseph, and Robert, born in the UK.

In 1880 they emigrated to Cape Town, where two further children were born - Ethel May and Wilfred.
